Pediatric cancers are relatively common in Egypt contributing about 6.4% of all
cancer patients as compared to 1% in USA.
The relative frequency of pediatric cancers in Egypt (1993 - 1997) as compared
to Europe (1990) and the USA (1997) is given in (Table 5). It is well noted that
though the relative frequency of leukemia in Egypt has a comparable figure to that
of USA and Europe, lymphoma shows a markedly higher figure.
Leukemia /Lymphoma
ratio in the Egyptian series is 1.1/1.
The relatively small frequency of CNS malignancy in the NCI-Egypt series (1.6%)
compared to the USA (19%) and Europe (20%) is probably a bias due to lack of
neurosurgery services at NCI - Egypt.
