Overall and Specific Objectives of the project

 Overall objective:

Preparing for accreditation of the Bone marrow transplantation laboratory Unit at National Cancer Institute, Cairo University

Specific objectives:

·  Developing a culture of quality and getting employees involved in the process of identifying opportunities for continuous improvement: by gaining insight into the latest international Accreditation Standards ISO 17025 and ISO 15189 for Medical Laboratories. Discover the means of implementing ISO 15189.

·   Infrastructure improvement: of the lab according to the ISO 15189 standards, in order to maintain the safety of patients and health workers from hazards and accidents.

·   Laboratory equipment: an upgrade of the laboratory equipment will be necessary in the bone marrow transplant lab unit. Addition of up-to-date instruments, missing tools and reagents will help the lab team to reach accurate diagnosis and engage in protocols for routine and research, to have more contracts and cooperation with national and international institutes.

·   Personnel and continuing education: this can be done by conducting education and training courses; on-the-job training, there should be a continuing education program available for all levels of staff.

·   Provide the BMT lab with a laboratory information system (LIS) with internet connection and website: an up-to-date LIS will be provided to manage the patient’s data, sampling process, clinical analysis, quality control, results reporting, quality indicators, lab statistics, turnaround time and audits….etc. The website will be designed and constructed to give full information about the lab and to be accessible for customers, trainees, researchers and medical institutes.

·   Initiating the accreditation process:  The laboratory will participate in an inspection program to include on-site inspection by an external team and interim self-inspection. The inspection will be done at intervals and in a manner determined by the ISO 15189 Standards on Laboratory Accreditation. The steps will start by filling the application form for accreditation and list the applicable tests and methods/techniques. Requesting the pre-assessment visit and compliance their elements filling the application form for accreditation and list the applicable tests and methods/techniques. ·  Provide a quality management system: This will include a system of analytical process control (quality control) and proficiency testing as required by the ISO 15189 Standards. The system will also include processes designed to improve patient care. This system will address new and existing programs and involve all represented disciplines, and the effectiveness of the quality improvement program will be measured
